When someone, whether an individual or a church, does their homework before making major decisions, the outcome is always better, and usually much better.

In some years, church building expenses can consume a third of a church’s budget. The mortgage payment is just the start. There are utilities and property insurance, maintenance and other costs.

There can be multiple options to consider. What should we build and where? Should we buy a building instead? Or, should we stay where we are and renovate?

‘Good problem’ not easily solved

Similar factors came into play with Redeemer Rockwall in Texas, our case study story this month. Their church was bursting at the seams with 500 to 600 people and three to four services in a sanctuary that held 200.

Redeemer had land and building plans, a neighboring church building to consider buying, and the scant possibility of staying where they were. We were with them every step of the way as they tried to decide what to do.

Asking questions, refining priorities

What were the prevailing views of church leadership?
What could CIF see that the church could not?
If they went a certain way – what would the outcome be?
What were the pros and cons their church board should mull over and pray about?
What building expenses, future costs and limitations would follow each course of action?

Those are substantial questions requiring careful consultation. Paying something to an expert in this field would likely yield hundreds of thousands in savings for the future, strengthening ministry.

Relationships matter in times of decision
Redeemer Rockwall has a longstanding relationship with CIF, so we gave our input at no additional cost. Nonprofits like us can do that because we make Kingdom expansion our priority.

I would go a step further – we are energized by these interactions. We share freely and relish the chance to help God’s Kingdom expand. This is our calling as an organization.
